01.03: Oscillating Reactions (Part 2)

Cleaning Out Chemical Storage

Having been filmed two weeks ago, this video should have been published a lot sooner!

Why wasn’t it? Well, a few reasons. First, I decided that I wanted to try the four-color oscillating reaction with fresh malonic acid solution. I didn’t do that when I did the first round of filming, so I had to film that part separately. Then, there was the Thanksgiving holiday. This year, I was in charge of making the turkey and stuffing for the whole extended family. I went very well, I’m pleased to report.

My plan was to do a little filming on Thanksgiving, because I do love an audience when I do chemistry. I have a large scale demonstration planned for the next video, and I thought it would be best to do it with a large audience. That didn’t work out, though, so they’ll have to watch it on YouTube like everyone else!

Which brings up an interesting fact: nobody in my family knows I have a YouTube channel…

That’s not completely true, I told my mom. But she’s not particularly internet-inclined, so until I send her a link, she’s probably not going to watch my videos. The rest of the family, however, is very much into the YouTube. My cousin’s girlfriend recommended I watch this cool video about aluminum and mercury. I knew immediately she was talking about Nile Red, whom I linked to in my second video!

It was actually a surreal moment for me. I’m well aware of the chemistry channels already on YouTube, but now I AM a chemistry channel on YouTube. (Nobody’s watching it yet, but still. It’s on there!) This has inspired me to keep going. I’m not really publicizing my channel at all because these videos about cleaning up my storage room are more for practice than for actual views. I’m sure they’ll be seen as people discover my channel, but I’m waiting for better content before I start promoting it. This has me wanting to make that better content sooner!

I’ve been a bit nervous to film the next video because it’s going to be filmed mostly in the dark. I’ve never successfully filmed anything in the dark before, and I’m not sure it’s going to work properly. But I’m going to get to it right now!

Look for the next video to be a glowing success!
